TV is Still King!
Do you remember the 1980 hit song “Video Killed the Radio Star” by the Buggles? OK, I’m dating myself. The point is some people believe digital video is killing the TV star. Traditional TV viewing overall is down based on a five-year Nielsen study. However, the average time an 18+ spends with live TV is still over 3 ½ hours. That is more time than any other medium…including apps/web on a smartphone or tablet.
However, there are many more choices available now than in the past. Twenty years ago, no one had heard of a DVR, You Tube or alternative TV. Satellite options were mainly for rural areas and Netflix was just being developed.
Fast forward to 2018 and the options (seem) endless for viewing options. Time-spent with internet-enabled televisions is also growing. Over 58% of US TV households (almost 70 million people!) have an enabled device (smart TV, game console, multi-media device) that allows for streaming video over a TV. That number will continue to grow as ‘alternative’ viewing options like Netflix, YouTube, Hulu and Sling continue to grow.
Think about how you watch TV. How often do you not have a tablet, laptop or smartphone in your hand (or nearby) when viewing? How many times have you paused the TV, or hit the rewind button to learn more about a product? Have you ever looked up that product on a nearby device to learn more? Have you ever learned about a show online then programmed your DVR to record? TV and Internet work together, cohesively to further enhance your viewing experience.
