The Ins and Outs of SEO

One of the hottest topics in the digital world today is Search Engine Optimization. SEO organic search is usually the primary source of website traffic, and SEO is a long-term strategy that can help you get the most out of your site and increase your traffic for years to come. 

What is SEO?

Let’s start with the basics. What exactly is Search Engine Optimization? More commonly referred to as SEO, Search Engine Optimization is the process of optimizing a website and its content to maximize search engine findability, content relevance, and user experience. It can be a complex process, but doing it well has been proven to generate real results in business. 

The Benefits of SEO

Why are good SEO practices so important? For one, most search engine users click on a page in the top five results of a query. Optimizing your site can help you get into those top five slots, driving more traffic to your site. Appearing further up in the list also helps give your site credibility, because users trust the sites that search engines provide. 

Also, it brings customers to your site who are actively searching for your product or service. Your site is relevant to what they need, so this is more likely to lead to conversions and sales.

The Three Stages

SEO has three stages. If they’re done well, they all work together to boost your site, increasing traffic and site trust. The three stages are:

  1. Technical SEO

The settings you need to configure to make your site easy to find by web crawlers. This is the one stage of SEO that typically only has to be done once. When you get it right, you probably won’t have to change it again. Technical SEO practices include specifying a preferred domain, optimizing your URL structure, having a clear navigation system, and making sure your site is mobile-friendly. 

2. On-page (on-site) SEO

Primarily deals with content, images, and other elements found on the page itself. Here, it is critical to utilize keywords. Choose a few relevant keywords to use, and then include them in the text on your pages as well as the titles on your images. It’s also important to include them in the title and description that appears in search engines. However, you don’t want to overload your content with keywords- choose three to five to use. 

Another important component of on-site SEO is high-quality content. What kind of content is considered “high-quality?” First and foremost, original content. You don’t want to plagiarize or post content from other sites, even it you attribute it, because the search engines may flag it as spam. Original content can come in the form of articles, images, videos, infographics, lists, or whatever format best serves to relay the information- as long as it’s unique to your site. It’s important to note that with visual content such as videos or images, you should also include a text description to make it easier for search engines to identify. 

3. Off-site (off-page) SEO

This mostly involves web page promotion through backlinks. If there are links to your websites coming from well-known and trusted sites, that can in turn signal that your site can be trusted, which can greatly affect your ranking position in search engines results.
